We keep our Guernsey’s at pasture 24/7, and so they are also grass fed. However in the winter the grass goes dormant in our part country. So what can we do to keep them grass fed in the winter? We spend a huge part of our summer days putting up hay for the winter. Did you know corn is a grass too. So we also put up corn silage in our silos. The whole stalk cob and everything is chopped up and stored for winter. Like corn, oats barley, and wheat are also a technically a grass, but we harvest only the seed and use the stalk of the plant as bedding in the thier sheds. We save the grain seed as an extra source of feed in the winter. So far this year we have put up about 1000 round bales of hay of different types. Sounds like a lot, but if we are feeding about 7 bales a day when the pasture grass is dormant, it goes fast. So, we will keep on making all the hay we can while the sun shines.
